UK broadband connections now over 14 million

October 26, 2015

The latest figures from Ofcom show broadband connections in the UK passing the 14 million mark in the second quarter.

According to Ofcom’s latest telecoms market report, broadband connections totaled 14,365,000 at the end of the quarter, almost 3 million more compared with the second quarter of 2006.

The number of LLU (Local Loop Unbundled) lines was 2,432,000, a rise of nearly 2 million in a year. LLU has now passed three million, and almost three quarters of households are now connected to an unbundled exchange.

The report shows that BT Total Broadband, the retail division of BT, increased its market share from 23.9 percent in the second quarter of 2006 to 25.9 per cent by the end of the second quarter of 2015.

This was achieved despite the growing competition from unbundled providers such as Tiscali and Sky, who offer cheap, or sometimes free broadband or line rental.
